The missing part of the collection
Three eighths of a collection of counters are red and one quarter are blue. The remaining 15 counters are green. Every counter is exactly one of these colours. How many counters are in the collection?
Suggested first attempt: 4 minutes. Take longer if useful; this is practice, not a timed assessment.
1 · A hint to get started
Write one quarter in eighths. What fraction is left for the green counters?
2 · Work through the solution
- One quarter is 2/8, so red and blue together make 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8.
- Green counters therefore make the remaining 3/8. If 3/8 is 15 counters, 1/8 is 5 counters.
- The whole collection is eight lots of 5: 8 × 5 = 40 counters.
Answer: 40 counters
Check: Of 40 counters, 15 are red and 10 are blue, leaving 15 green. The three counts add to 40.
What I would ask next: Which fraction describes the 15 counters? Can you show the whole collection as eight equal parts?
3 · Try a related question
Keep the same colour fractions, but suppose there are 21 green counters. How many counters are there altogether?
Check the follow-up answer
56 counters: three eighths is 21, so one eighth is 7 and the whole is 56.
