13+ ENTRY · MATHS, TEST TECHNIQUE & ACADEMIC DISCUSSION
Understand the route.
Prepare for the stage that matters.
Personal online preparation with Raphael: strengthen understanding, work through unfamiliar Maths and practise explaining a thought clearly.
START WITH THE RIGHT ROUTE
13+ entry can start in Year 6.
13+ means entering Year 9, but preparation does not always wait until Year 8. Westminster and St Paul’s select many candidates through tests and interviews in Year 6, for entry three years later.
A pupil taking a Year 6 pre-test needs age-appropriate foundations and reasoning. A pupil sitting a later 13+ subject paper may need a different syllabus. We confirm the school, entry year and actual assessment before choosing material.
Compare school routes, subjects and dates ↗How I help your child.
- Secure the Maths: number, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measures and geometry, matched to the published requirements and your child’s starting point.
- Find a way into a problem: draw a diagram, organise examples, work backwards or break a question into smaller steps.
- Use the test format well: careful reading, tidy rough work, sensible pacing and checking. Online adaptive tests and written papers need different routines.
- Explain aloud: listen to a question, describe an approach and use a hint without feeling that the first answer must be perfect.
English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning can also be assessed. The exam guide explains those components; my subject tuition centres on Maths, alongside test technique and academic discussion.
If the assessment is close.
- 01Confirm the stage
School, entry year and the next assessment.
- 02Choose priorities
Find the knowledge or method that needs work.
- 03Practise with feedback
Work through an idea, then explain it.
- 04Try independently
A fresh question, with fewer prompts.
No crash course can promise an offer. The aim is to make the available preparation useful and understandable.
Interview preparation that sounds like your child.
We practise genuine discussion: a favourite idea, a Maths puzzle, or how to respond when a new question feels difficult. I ask follow-ups and give specific feedback on listening, explaining and checking. We do not memorise a polished personality or invent interests.
