WHY LEARN WITH RAPHAEL?

Understand the question.
Own the next step.

Subject knowledge matters. So does making that knowledge usable when a question feels unfamiliar.

01 / SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE

Turn strong Maths into clear explanations.

With A*s in Maths and Further Maths, I explain the idea through diagrams and small examples, then check it with a fresh question.

02 / SCHOOL EXPERIENCE

Make room for a thoughtful answer.

I bring first-hand Westminster experience to supportive academic discussion. Your child practises explaining an idea, using a hint and responding to a new question.

03 / DIRECT SUPPORT

One tutor. Clear priorities. Useful feedback.

The person you speak to is the person who teaches your child. I set the practice and explain what they can do independently and what to work on next.

TRY A QUESTION TOGETHER

One good question.
More than one useful lesson.

18 original practice problems, with hints, worked solutions, checks and a fresh question to try.

11+ / 13+ · SYSTEMATIC THINKING

Which number
could it be?

A two-digit number has digits that add to 11. Reversing its digits makes it 27 larger. What was the original number?

Try a small list before opening the explanation. No algebra is needed.

01 · A starting hint

List the two-digit numbers whose digits add to 11. Which ones become larger when their digits are reversed?

02 · How I would work through it

The candidates that become larger are 29, 38, 47 and 56. Reversing them increases them by 63, 45, 27 and 9 respectively. So the number is 47: 4 + 7 = 11 and 74 − 47 = 27.

I would ask your child how they know the list is complete, then explore why the differences change by 18 each time.

03 · Try a related problem

Keep the digit sum at 11, but make the increase 45. What is the original number?

Check: 38, because 83 − 38 = 45.

The lesson: organise possibilities, use both conditions, then check the answer in the original question.

Original teaching examples. Difficulty labels are guides, not age cut-offs or predicted exam content.

Your diagnostic summary.

A sample of the feedback format, not a real pupil’s results.

Starting point

Confident with whole-number calculations. Unsure how to organise the information in a multi-step word problem.

Priority

Draw or list the known information before choosing a calculation. Explain what the question is asking.

Next practice

Three word problems. For each: identify what is known, choose a representation, solve, then check the original conditions.

Review

Try a fresh question next lesson. Can the pupil choose a representation and explain it with fewer prompts?

Specific enough to guide practice. Clear enough to discuss together.

FOUNDER & TUTOR

Hello,
I’m Raphael.

Westminster alumnus.
Maths and Physics tutor.
Your point of contact.

I want your child to understand why a method works — and recognise when to use it for themselves.

I attended Westminster from Year 4 onwards and achieved four A*s in Maths, Further Maths, Economics and Physics, following ten grade 9s and one grade 8 at GCSE.

That subject background is the starting point. In a lesson, I make the thinking visible: how to interpret a question, choose a useful representation and check whether an answer makes sense.

You speak with me about the goals, I teach the lessons, and I explain what to practise next. Preparation is shaped around your child’s starting point and the school’s published requirements.

See how I explain a problem

My Westminster experience is a personal perspective on school life. It is not a school endorsement, inside access to admissions or a claim to have entered at 16+.

USEFUL BEFORE THE NEXT LESSON

A clearer picture
of the preparation.

Start with the route, see the teaching, then decide what your child needs.

PRACTICAL QUESTIONS

Before you
take the next step.

Clear expectations from the first conversation.

Who will teach my child?

Raphael teaches the Maths and Physics tuition described here and is your point of contact. We agree the subjects, goals and available lesson times before you pay.

What happens on the free parent call?

We discuss your child’s current year group, target schools, subject needs and confirmed assessment dates. You can ask about the approach, availability and price. It is a free 15-minute Google Meet conversation. Choose a time in Calendly and complete the booking there. There is no payment or commitment to lessons.

What does my child need for online tuition?

A quiet space, a stable internet connection, a laptop or tablet, and pen and paper. We agree the video-call setup in advance and make sure your child can show their working. We also discuss whether online tuition and a 60-minute session suit their age and needs.

What feedback and homework will we receive?

After the diagnostic, you receive a concise summary of strengths, priorities and suggested practice. Continuing lessons include targeted homework and a short parent update. Related questions help us check what your child can now do with less support.

Do we have to book four lessons?

No. Start with one diagnostic: £65 for 11+/13+, or £75 for 16+. Continuing lessons have the same hourly price. The optional 16+ programme is £300 for four lessons in total, including the diagnostic.

Can you help with an approaching assessment?

Share the actual exam date, subject requirements and registration or shortlist status. We discuss whether the remaining time and available slots allow useful preparation, then prioritise specific gaps. Schools’ application deadlines are separate from their assessment dates.

Can we join from Hong Kong or Singapore?

Yes, subject to compatible lesson times. Tuition is online and taught in English. We confirm both local time zones before lessons begin; available times are agreed rather than assumed.

Which parts of entry preparation do you cover?

Maths tuition, test technique and academic interview practice for 11+, 13+ and 16+, plus Physics at 16+. Lessons include explaining reasoning and responding to follow-up questions. English, verbal/non-verbal reasoning, school selection and application handling are outside the core tuition offer. We confirm the exact scope before starting; tuition does not guarantee an offer.

How are payments and cancellations handled?

You receive the fees, payment arrangements and cancellation or rescheduling terms in writing before booking paid tuition. We keep initial contact with a parent or guardian and agree communication arrangements before lessons start.
