ROUTES FROM HONG KONG

Three routes,
and what I teach for each.

Whichever route your child is on, lessons build the same three things: secure Maths, calm test technique and the confidence to think aloud in an interview.

11+ AND 13+

Boarding school entry

Many boarding schools test 13+ candidates with the ISEB Common Pre-Test in Year 6 or 7. Children in Hong Kong can sit it online at their own school or at an approved centre such as the British Council. Interviews follow, online at some schools and in person at others.

What we work on

  • Maths for the pre-test and school papers
  • Adaptive test technique and timing
  • Interview practice on video
See a Maths teaching example ↗
16+

Sixth-form entry, including Westminster

Westminster takes international boarders at 16+. Candidates sit a 45-minute paper in each of their four A-level subjects, then invited candidates interview in person in London. Overseas invigilation at a British Council requires Westminster’s prior approval; parents arrange and pay the centre. Candidates offering Music must sit the papers at Westminster.

2027 entry — already registered applicants only. Registration is closed. Written papers: Sat 7 Nov 2026. Interviews for invited candidates: Sat 28 Nov 2026 in London. We confirm the remaining stage and lesson availability before starting.

2028 entry: registration 1 June to 30 September 2027

What we work on

  • Maths and Physics papers
  • Subject and general interviews

INTERVIEWS

Entrance interviews

Schools interview to see how a child thinks, not what they have memorised. Mock interviews run on video in Hong Kong evenings, with questions like the ones I was asked and written feedback after each one.

What we work on

  • Thinking aloud with confidence
  • Handling follow-up questions
  • 45-minute mock interviews, HK$780
See mock interview fees ↗

Westminster at 13+: pupils under 16 can apply only if their parents live in the UK, and the school has no international boarding places in Years 9 to 11. From Hong Kong, Westminster is a 16+ route.

SEE HOW I TEACH

One problem.
A method your child can explain.

An original 11+ / 13+ teaching example, not an official paper or a prediction of an exam question.

MATHS · SYSTEMATIC THINKING

Which number could it be?

A two-digit number has digits that add to 11. Reversing its digits makes it 27 larger. What was the original number?

Start with a useful hint

List the two-digit numbers with digit sum 11. Which become larger when reversed?

Work through the method

The candidates are 29, 38, 47 and 56. Reversing them increases them by 63, 45, 27 and 9. The answer is 47: 4 + 7 = 11 and 74 − 47 = 27.

I ask your child how they know the list is complete, then vary one condition to check that they can use the method independently.

Try a related problem

Keep the digit sum at 11, but make the increase 45.

Check: 38, because 83 − 38 = 45.

ABOUT

Hello,
I’m Raphael.

I sat entry interviews at 8+, 11+ and 13+, then went through Westminster from the Under School to A-levels: ten grade 9s and an 8 at GCSE, and A*s in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics.

I have family in Mid-Levels, so I know both ends of the time difference. When I’m in Hong Kong, I teach in person there too.

Already working with a consultant?

Many families in Hong Kong use an education consultant to choose schools and handle applications. I don’t do placement. I prepare your child for the tests and interviews on the plan you already have, and I’m happy to share lesson notes with your consultant.

English school-year cohorts usually run from 1 September to 31 August. Use this as a guide to possible entry years, not confirmation of eligibility or an open application. Each school confirms its own assessment stages and deadlines. Your selections stay on this page and are not sent.

QUESTIONS

Questions from
Hong Kong parents.

Can my child sit the tests in Hong Kong?

Arrangements depend on the school and subject. The ISEB Common Pre-Test is taken online at an approved school or test centre; confirm your chosen centre with the senior school. Westminster must approve overseas supervision in advance; parents arrange and pay for British Council invigilation, and Music candidates must sit at Westminster. Interviews vary: some schools interview online, while others, including Westminster at 16+, interview only in person in London.

Do lesson times move when UK clocks change?

No. Lessons stay at the same Hong Kong time all year. The UK changes its clocks in late March and late October, and I adjust my side.

Do you teach English, verbal or non-verbal reasoning?

My subject tuition covers Maths, plus Physics at 16+, with test technique and academic interview practice. Lessons are taught in English. I do not provide English-language tuition, specialist verbal/non-verbal reasoning, school placement or application handling; these may need separate support.

What about UKiset?

UKiset is an online reasoning and English assessment used by some schools. Westminster requires applicants with English as an additional language to submit UKiset or IELTS Academic as part of their application, completed before the application deadline (30 September 2026 for 2027 entry). My tuition can help with numerical reasoning and test technique; I do not teach the English sections. Check the school’s current requirements for your child’s entry year.

Do you teach in person in Hong Kong?

Yes, in Mid-Levels and Central when I’m in Hong Kong, at HK$100 more per lesson. Online lessons continue as normal the rest of the time.

How do I pay from Hong Kong?

By card, through a secure payment link in Hong Kong dollars. Lessons are paid in advance; the parent call, diagnostic and plan are free.
